MUNCIE, IN - The Rockets (10-21, 4-10 MAC) gained a split of their doubleheader at Ball State (18-24, 7-7 MAC) by posting a 3-2 victory in the nightcap after falling in the opener by a 1-0 margin. UT's victory snapped a season-high eight-game losing streak.
In the opener, the Cardinals plated the game's lone run in the second inning after two were out. Ruth Hjelmeland's triple to right field was followed by Janice Campbell's RBI single into center.
BSU's Marcy Mobley (12-11) allowed just two Rockets to reach base on base hits by sophomore third baseman Kalika Stavroulakis and sophomore rightfielder Danielle D'Amore. Sophomore Colette McMasters (4-10) was the hard-luck loser and yielded just four Cardinal hits.
In the second game, the Rockets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. UT scored all of its runs after two were out. Sophomore shortstop Laurie Linton reached on a one-out walk and scored on junior catcher Laurie Nagel's single. Following a walk to freshman centerfielder Jenny Schaaf, sophomore first baseman Deanna House drilled a two-run triple to center.
Junior Kristy Kassotis (6-11) held BSU scoreless until the fifth inning. The Cardinals scored on an RBI single from Misty Snider in the fifth and when Erin Brin reached on an error by junior second baseman Jenny May in the sixth.
The Rockets will return to action again this weekend vs. Northern Illinois in their final home games of the 2000 campaign. Friday's game will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Saturday's twinbill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
