Stan Clarke lettered in baseball from 1979-81, and in just three seasons established himself as one of the most successful pitchers in school history. His prowess on the mound helped the Rockets to records of 24-16 (1979), 28-24 (1980) and 30-20 (1981).

He accumulated a 17-7 career record at UT, and known for excellent ball control, tallied 176 strikeouts to just 76 bases on balls. As a freshman in 1979, Clarke posted a 4-2 record and finished second on the team in strikeouts (48). In 1980, he led the Rockets in earned run average (2.66), tallying 56 strikeouts and finishing 5-3. Three of the wins were shutouts, coming at the expense of Bowling Green, Michigan and Ball State. He was named to the All-MAC first- team despite missing two weeks of the season with an illness.

The summer before his junior year, Clarke represented the United States in the World Amateur Baseball Tournament, and after a stellar performance in the even was named to the All-World Team.

His UT career culminated in an 8-2 record in 1982, his junior year. Following that season, he decided to enter the Major League Baseball draft and signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite foregoing his senior year, Clarke finished his career sixth in UT history in victories (17), fourth in winning percentage (.757) and strikeouts per inning (1.06).

Clarke made his debut with the Jays in 1983 and played in the major leagues until 1991. His professional career also included stops with the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals.
