A four-year starter for the Lady Rockets, Kelly Savage came to UT from Toledo's Notre Dame Academy. During the two years previous to her arrival, the women's basketball team posted a combined record of 13-41, but Savage helped build the tradition that defines the program today. With her presence on the court, the Rockets jumped to a 12-14 record in 1986-87 and 14 -14 in 1987-88. A third-place finish in the WNIT Tournament accompanied a 25-8 record her junior year, and a 25-7 second-place WNIT finish rounded her Rocket career. During the WNIT in 1989, Savage accumulated 52 points and an impressive 23 assists over three games. In the following postseason, Savage racked up 62 points, 22 assists and a WNIT-record 14 three pointers. She was named to the WNIT All-Tournament team for the second time as Toledo finished runner-up to Kentucky. Savage was awarded the MAC freshman of the year award following the 1986-87 season, and was named to the All-MAC team following her junior (1988-89) and senior (1989-90) seasons. She finished her stellar career as the Rockets' all-time scoring leader with 1,677 points. She led her team in scoring each of the latter three years of her career, posting averages of 15.5 points as a sophomore, 16.2 as a junior and 14.6 as a senior. By the end of her Rocket career, she held a total of 23 school records that also included career marks for field goal attempted (1,294), three point field goals attempted (708) and made (273), three-point field goal percentage (.386), free throws attempted (474) and made (390), free throw percentage (.823), assists (640), minutes played (3,700) and games played (118). At the time of her graduation, Savage was also third all-time in MAC scoring, and her 255 three-point field goals placed her first in conference history and second in NCAA women's basketball history.
