Hall of Fame
John Papcun lettered in 1958, 1959, and 1960. In his career, he appeared in 58 games averaging 10.6 points per game. An outstanding shooter, his specialty high-arc set shot paced him to score in double figures all three years at UT. Papcun's shooting percentage from the field (.450) and the charity stripe (.710) helped lead to his 615 total career points. He averaged 6.7 boards per game and grabbed a career total of 389. During the 1958-59 season, Papcun led the Rockets in field goal percentage (.461) and was named honorable mention all-conference for his efforts. However, his best showing was during the 1959-60 season when he averaged 11.4 points per game. That same year he was named first-team All-MAC and led his squad to an 18-6 record and a national ranking of 11th. He finished first in the MAC in free throw percentage, fifth in field goal percentage, ninth in rebounding and 17th in scoring. Papcun's 1959-60 team still holds the Rocket defensive team record for points in a MAC game (58.5) and also is the squad that began the famous 26 years of consecutive winning season at UT. Papcun is a 1961 graduate of The University of Toledo from the College of Engineering. He was also elected president of his junior class in 1958-59. Involvement in UT activities include, membership on the Varity "T" Club and Rocket Club, past president of the Sandusky Bay UT Alumni Association and freshman basketball coach for the Rockets form 1960-61. "I was very fortunate to be involved with athletics and the fine engineering school at The University of Toledo" says Papcun. "Both had a tremendous impact on my life. I'm very proud to have been a Rocket and of course I still bleed blue and gold."
