John Meier played golf for Toledo from 1930-33. He was Toledo's star golfer, with the team posting winning records each season he participated. He was the team's No. 1 player, posting a stroke average of 71 every year. Meier played on the first golf team at Libbey High School in Toledo, and was a member of the squad that won the state championship in 1929. He was a city amateur golf champion many times during the 1930s and 1940s, and won the Toledo District Golf Association Amateur Championship in 1939. He was a member of Heatherdowns Country Club and for many years held the course record. An army veteran, Meier was stationed in Antwerp Belgium during World War II. As a private, he exhibited such talent on the links that the Royal Antwerp Golf Club invited him to become an honorary member. He played to a zero handicap, winning a number of the club's amateur competitions. Meier gained national notoriety by playing in a match in Inglewood, Calif., in 1943. In a benefit for the Army and Navy Relief Fund, private Meier teamed up with Bing Crosby to defeat Bob Hope and navy seaman Sam Snead. Meier had the low gross score, carding a 69. A bookkeeper for Libbey-Owens-Ford Co. for 35 years, Meier retired in 1971. He passed away in June of 1980.
