Jim Swaney lettered in basketball at The University of Toledo from 1976-80. He was MAC "Player of the Week" in 1980 and first-team All-MAC in 1979 and 1980, playing on teams that recorded a 77 percent winning percentage and a combined record of 87-26 (21-6, 21-6, 22-8, 23-6 from 1976-80). He scored a total of 1,328 points for his career and ranks 2nd in career field goal percentage (.572). He also ranks 5th in field goal percentage in a season (.616). He played on two MAC Championship teams, in 1979 and 1980, which advanced to the NCAA tournament. The 1978-79 team recorded a 22-8 record and defeated Big-Ten champion Iowa, 74-72, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tourney. That win advanced UT to the semifinals against Notre Dame and put it into the "Sweet Sixteen" round. Toledo gave Notre Dame all it could handle before losing, 79-71. Swaney played perhaps the finest game of his career, scoring 26 points against the Irish and earning himself a spot on the Mideast ALL-Tournament team. In 1979, he was named the MVP in the MAC's first post season tournament and led Toledo to its second straight league title. Another MVP honor came that year in the Indianapolis All-Star game. In 1980, he was a fifth round draft choice of the Philadelphia 76ers and also played professionally one year in Istanbul, Turkey, and three years in England.
