Gene Stauber had a 41-year football career, which began in 1947. Stauber's teams compiled a 19-8-3 record over his three seasons, which were interuppted by World War II. After earning a bachelor's degree in 1947, Stauber began a three-year stint as the freshman football coach for the Rockets. Serving in the Fifth Army during World War II, Stauber was awarded the Bronze Star. He also managed to find football in the midst of wartime chaos, participating in the "Spaghetti Bowl" in Italy before a crowd of 25,000. Through the next several years, Stauber served with a variety of football teams as he climbed the coaching ranks. Stauber came out of retirement to help coach Dana College's football team, and it was here that he suffered a fatal heart attack while peparing for practice in 1985. The Gene Stauber Award, given annually in his honor, awarded to a member of the Dana College Football team "who does the most and receives the least amount of credit." Accomplishing many things including taking two teams to the Rose Bowl during his long and distinguised career as a coach, Stauber earned the respect of both his peers and players. People who have played for and coached with Stauber remebered his love for the game, and his dedication to football was visible in every aspect of his life.
