A native of Toledo and a graduate of DeVilbiss High School, Doc Leffler lettered four times for wrestling in 1951-1954. The first three teams he was on were Mid-American Conference Champions. Doc himself was Mid-American champion in both 1952 and 1953 and undefeated in MAC competition. Doc competed in the NCAA championship tournament, and his only losses were twice to the eventual National Champion "Snip" Nalen of Michigan. Doc Leffler's teams at Toledo St. Francis won two state championships and were runners-up several times. During his tenure there the teams put together a string of 102 consecutive dual meet victories. Doc later coached a United States junior Olympic team that toured Europe. He left coaching in 1971 because of his very successful physical therapy practice and increasing business interests, he returned to coaching in 1976.
