Charles Chuckovits is the University's first officially recognized basketball All-American (Converse). Chuckovits starred on the first Toledo teams to play intersectional schedules in 1937-39, teams that won 49 games and lost only 20. He scored a then record for total career points, 1,189, averaged 17.2 career points per game, and totaled 449 points in one season. He was first team all-Ohio and honorary captain as a sophomore. He also ranks fourth in UT history for points in an individual game (41) vs. Adrian College (12/14/37), which at the time was a national record. As a senior, he broke the Ohio college scoring record with 449 points.

After graduation, he played in the National Professional Basketball League and was its leading scorer and most valuable player with an average of 24.3 points per game and captained its West All-Star team in 1941.
In 1942 he was named the Chicago Herald-American's "Pro Player of the Year" and the most valuable player of that newspaper's professional tournament in which he was the leading scorer with 88 points in four games. He later became a basketball official in the National Professional Basketball League and the National Basketball Association. He also officiated in the Big Ten, the Missouri Valley Conference, the National Industrial Basketball League, and the Mid-American Conference. He officiated the NCAA Eastern Regional and the NCAA Championship Finals in 1957 and again in 1959. In 1958 Chuckovits was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame and in 2016 he was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.
