Lamar Thornton

Lamar Thornton enters his second year as a graduate assistant for the Toledo men’s basketball program. Thornton’s responsibilities with the Rockets will include player development, analytic breakdowns, video coordinator and assisting in organizing the program’s annual summer camps and the coordination of the Rockets’ community relations efforts.

Last year, Thornton helped Toledo make its third postseason appearance in the last six years with a trip to the College Basketball Invitational. Other highlights included senior forward Steve Taylor Jr. earning second-team All-MAC honors after leading the nation with 9.9 defensive rebounds per game and ranking third nationally with 12.2 rpg. Senior guard Jonathan Williams also received third-team All-MAC accolades for a second-straight season after ranking third in the MAC with 19.6 ppg.

A Columbus, OH native, Thornton arrives at UT after serving as an assistant coach last year at one of the premier prep schools in the country, Hargrave Military Academy. Thornton helped Hargrave post an amazing 47-1 win-loss mark en route to capturing its third national championship in school history.

Thornton’s previous coaching experience also includes stints as a student assistant at Ohio Dominican (2011-14) and as an assistant coach for the Hilliard Davidson High School varsity program (2014-15).

Thornton is the son of Calvin and Valerie Thornton and graduated from Ohio Dominican University in 2015, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management. He is pursuing a master’s degree in recreation and leisure studies at Toledo.
