Junior Bence Bertenyi ties for ninth place to lead Toledo
WESTCHESTER, Ill – Junior Bence Bertenyi registered another Top 10 finish and sophomore Harry McArdle fired his second 3-under 69 of the tournament on Tuesday to lead the Toledo men's golf team to a fourth-place showing at the Chicago Highlands Invitational.
The Rockets carded a 1-under 287 in today's final round to finish the tourney with a 7-over par 871. East Tennessee State edged Wake Forest for the team title by one stroke with an impressive 54-hole score of 21-under par.
"We played some really good golf at times and fought through tough conditions," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "Chicago lived up to its Windy City name. This is a course you need to play a handful of times to understand where to leave the ball, especially with some of those pin positions. If you got out of position, they could be downright dastardly. Coming off Inverness, a letdown was a real possibility, so I'm proud of what our guys accomplished."
Bertenyi birded his final hole of the day to move into a ninth-place tie at 1-under par 215 (71-72-72). McArdle registered three birdies in a bogey-free final round to finish tied for 11th place at 1-over par (69-79-69). Senior Brooks Pawlak also shot even-par in his final round.
Sophomore Braden Herstich competed as an individual in his first tournament of the season and tied for a career-best 15th-place with a career-low score of 2-over par 218 (76-70-72).
"I'm especially happy for Braden," Roope said. "He made the most of his opportunity, put up some good numbers and earned a top-15 finish. He should be really proud of that."
Toledo will be idle for nearly three weeks before returning to action at the Purdue Fall Invitational on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 12-13.
