Rocket junior captured Inverness Intercollegiate title on Tuesday
TOLEDO, Ohio - Junior Bence Bertényi has been named the Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Friday. It marked the second time in Bertenyi's collegiate career that he has received the weekly conference honor.
A Budapest, Hungary native, Bertenyi won the Inverness Intercollegiate title on Tuesday by shooting a three-under par 210 against a loaded field that included five teams ranked in the Top 10 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Preseason Coaches Poll and several of the top amateurs in the world. Bertenyi's play helped Toledo to a second-place tie in the event, marking its best finish ever in the tournament's history, which began in 2000.
Bertenyi captured his first individual title as a collegian after shooting a 1-under 70 on Sunday, an even-par 71 on Monday, and a 2-under 69 in the final round. He was the only individual to not shoot over par during the tournament and registered 10 birdies and just seven bogeys over 54 holes.
Bertenyi registered a nearly-flawless final round with just one bogey. He followed up his lone miscue on No. 10 with birdies on Nos. 11, 13 and 16 to capture the win.
Bertényi is back in action next week when the Rockets travel to the Windy City for the Highlands Invitational on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 21-22.
