Zoerhoff's winner caps dominant Rocket effort in early-season win
DETROIT, Mich. – Ella Zoerhoff scored with two seconds left to lift the Toledo women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Detroit Mercy at Titan Field on Thursday.
Â
The Rockets (1-1) built their attack throughout the game, dominating in shots, 23-5, including a 10-3 edge in the second half. The Rockets also registered all six shots on goal in the contest and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Toledo's victory was its sixth-straight over the Titans (1-2) since 2019, and ninth win in 11 meetings. Toledo also earned its first clean sheet on the road since Oct. 17, 2024 at Ohio.
Â
The victory marked the first time since 2017 that Toledo had secured a victory within the first two matches of the season.
Â
Zoerhoff's goal was her second in as many games, and the first time in her career she has scored in consecutive contests. Both goals this season have come on shots outside the penalty area.
Â
"I knew this was going to be the last chance and I had the confidence to take it," said Zoerhoff on the final kick. "Kiera Billis and I discussed what we'd do and I knew I was going to shoot it. I took a deep breath and did what I normally do, then it went in bottom-right around Detroit Mercy's wall. Our team worked so hard this game and we deserved a win."
Â
Quoting Head Coach Mark Batman
"Very proud of the group to finish it out. We played really well with having to shuffle a few girls around due to keeping some girls out. Shutout win on the road, all learning moments moving forward."
Â
Rocket Scoring Summary
The Rockets head home to face Mercyhurst in the 2026 home opener on Sunday, Aug. 23. Kickoff from Paul Hotmer Field is at 1 p.m. on BCSN and ESPN+. Toledo will honor five seniors before the contest.
