Rockets Fall in Season Opener to Dayton on Late Goal

DAYTON, Ohio – The Toledo women's soccer team held even with Dayton for most of the afternoon, but an 89th-minute goal stood as the difference in a 2-1 defeat to the Flyers at Baujan Field on Sunday.

The Rockets (0-1-0) jumped on the board quickly on Ella Zoerhoff's goal in the seventh minute. The goal was Toledo's earliest in a season since 2009. Dayton (1-0-1) equalized in the 21st minute and the teams remained tied at halftime. With Toledo dealing with defensive injuries throughout the match, the defending A-10 champs had the majority of the chances in the second half. However, the Rockets held the Flyers off the scoreboard until the final two minutes of the half, when Dayton's Lauren Contini struck for the winner.

Dayton led 34-10 in the shot count and 9-5 in shots on goal. The Flyers also had an 11-4 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Paige Dornheggen tallied seven saves, a career high. Zoerhoff's goal was the second of her career and she led UT with three total shots (two on goal).
