Toledo WR set career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns in blowout win over San Diego State
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo wide receiver Bryson Hammer has been named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week following a record-setting performance in the Rockets' 41-16 victory over San Diego State, the MAC announced Monday.
Hammer turned in the best performance of his career, catching six passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns—all career highs. The former walk-on delivered a pair of momentum-shifting touchdown catches of 78 and 38 yards on back-to-back offensive snaps spanning the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third, helping Toledo turn a 10-3 lead into a commanding 24-3 advantage.
A former walk-on from Fremont Ross, Hammer entered the season with just three career receptions, primarily making his impact as a punt returner. He has quickly emerged as a key weapon in Toledo's passing game this season, totaling 15 receptions for a team-high 286 yards and two touchdowns through four games.
Hammer ranks 51st nationally in receiving yards and is tied for ninth with four receptions of at least 30 yards.
Hammer is the second consecutive Rocket to earn MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, following quarterback John Alan Richter, who received the award last week.
Toledo (3-1) opens MAC play on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Ball State. Kickoff at Scheumann Stadium is set for 2 p.m., with the game being streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Rocket Radio Network.
