Toledo posted 84-79 home win over Broncos in MAC opener
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's basketball team (12-12, 6-5 MAC) will play the first of two road games this week when it travels to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face Western Michigan (8-15, 2-8 MAC). Tip-off time for the contest is set for 7:00 p.m. in University Arena with streaming on ESPN+.
Leroy Blyden Jr. and Sonny Wilson combined for 44 points, but it wasn't enough for the Rockets in Saturday's 73-71 defeat at James Madison in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Blyden topped the Rockets with 24 points (17 in the second half) and nearly put UT ahead with a shot that missed in the waning seconds. He previously gave Toledo a 71-70 advantage with 34.4 seconds remaining before JMU hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to regain the lead.
Wilson added 20 points for the Rockets, while Austin Parks contributed 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
The evenly-played contest was tied 32-32 at the half and featured nine lead changes and 10 occasions when the score was tied.
The Rockets are led by the backcourt duo of Wilson (17.2 ppg) and Blyden (16.2 ppg) along with the frontcourt tandem of Sean Craig (11.9 ppg) and Parks (11.3 ppg). Blyden leads all MAC freshmen with 16.2 ppg, while Wilson is dishing out a team-high 4.8 apg. Craig ranks fourth in the MAC with a team-best 7.7 rpg.
Blyden exploded for a season-high 36 points (27 in the second half) in UT's 84-79 win over WMU on Dec. 30. The Rockets were down 16 points in the second half, and the Broncos held a 61-48 advantage with 12:23 remaining.
Western Michigan dropped a 77-61 decision at Texas State on Saturday and is 7-4 at home this season. Justice Williams is one of three Broncos scoring in double digits at 15.3 ppg. He is joined by Jalen Griffith (13.5 ppg) and Jayden Brewer (13.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg).
