Junior wins second tourney of season with career-low 9-under 207 to lead Rockets to second-place finish

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Junior Bence Bertenyi won his second tournament title of the season on Tuesday to lead the Toledo men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Purdue Fall Invitational.

Bertényi shot a second-straight 4-under par 68 today on the par-72, 7,465-yard Kampen-Cosler Golf Course to win the title by two strokes over Indiana's Cole Starnes and Illinois' Harrison Zipfel. He held the lead the entire back nine and didn't register a bogey until his final hole of the day.

"Bence continued the strong form he's shown since the summer and put together another outstanding tournament," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "To have him earn the individual title while our team finishes second against a quality field says a lot about the direction we're heading."

Senior Brooks Pawlak registered the Rockets' second-best finish in the tourney, tying for 17^th place at 2-over.

Joining Bertenyi with rounds under par today were sophomores Braden Herstich and Harry McArdle. Herstich finished the event tied for 20^th place at 3-over, with McArdle tying for 26^th place at 4-over.

Bertenyi tied for the tournament lead with 15 birdies and led all individuals in par-3 scoring at 3-under par. McArdle led the way in par-5 scoring at 6-under par.

"I'm really proud of the way our team competed this week," Roope said. "In a six-count-five format, it was encouraging to see some of our depth step up and contribute, which is something we'll need throughout the year. There are a lot of positives to take away, and we're excited to keep building on this momentum."

The host Boilermakers captured the team title at 4-under par, with the Rockets finishing eight shots back at 4-over. Ball State finished third at 14-over, while Indiana was fourth at 19-over.

The Rockets will complete their fall season next week when it travels to Johnson City, Tenn. for East Tennessee State's Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 19-21.
