Freshman Leroy Blyden Jr.'s 22 points leads five Rockets in double figures
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman guard Leroy Blyden Jr. scored a game-high 22 points and Toledo shot 54.9% from the field, but it wasn't enough in the Toledo men's basketball team's 84-82 defeat at UMass in the Mullins Center on Tuesday night. The Rockets (10-9, 4-3 MAC) just missed coming away with a big road win over the Minutemen (12-8, 3-5 MAC) in a tight contest that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes.
Blyden delivered another standout shooting performance, knocking down 7-of-10 shots and finishing a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Junior guard Sonny Wilson added 16 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds, while junior center Austin Parks provided 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting while also going 6-of-6 from the line.
Kyler Vanderjagt and Sean Craig each chipped in 12 points, with Craig knocking down three triples and grabbing five boards.
The game was tight from start to finish, with neither team leading by more than two possessions for long stretches and UMass holding a narrow 35–34 halftime lead.
Leonardo Bettiol led UMass with 20 points and nine rebounds.
QUOTING HEAD COACH TOD KOWALCZYK:
"We battled tonight against a physical team. They got us tonight on the glass and we also had some uncharacteristic turnovers. We shot the ball well and could have been even better if we finished the way we can."
