Sonny Wilson scores 25 and Leroy Blyden Jr. adds 24 as Toledo shoots 61.9%
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's basketball team put on an offensive show on Tuesday night in Savage Arena, shooting a blistering 61.9% from the field en route to a 101-85 victory over Ohio. The Rockets (10-7, 4-1 MAC) moved into a second-place tie in the Mid-American Conference with the victory that snapped the Bobcats' five-game winning streak. Toledo also extended its winning streak to 10 in a row over Ohio (10-8, 4-2 MAC)
Junior Sonny Wilson and freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. topped UT offensively with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Senior Sean Craig (15 pts., 11 reb.) and junior Austin Parks (13 pts., 5 reb.) controlled the paint and helped the Rockets register a 34-26 advantage on the boards.
Toledo fell behind early, 22-9, less than six minutes into the game before rallying to take a 52-50 halftime lead. Blyden keyed the Rockets' comeback by scoring seven straight points to close out the half.
Wilson ignited the Rockets in the second half with two quick baskets and hitting a three-pointer that gave UT a double-digit lead, 65-54, at the 17:08 mark. Toledo's lead didn't drop below 11 the rest of the evening.
Ohio was led by redshirt junior Javan Simmons (21 pts.) and senior Jackson Paveletzke (20 pts.).
QUOTING HEAD COACH TOD KOWALCZYK:
"We played with confidence and purpose. With Sonny and Leroy making plays tonight, they make me look awfully good as a coach. I thought a big key was Ohio having only one three-point field goal in the second half after starting hot with eight threes in the first half . It was an emotional game, and Ohio is a rivalry game for us. We have a ton of respect for their program, and they have some really good players. We beat a veteran team and a well-coached team."
