TOLEDO, Ohio – Former Toledo baseball pitcher
Grant Umberger has signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox, signing with the club on a minor- league deal with a spring training invite.

In 2024, Umberger was named First-Team All-MAC after registering a 3.81 ERA in 15 games, the lowest ERA in the MAC. Umberger pitched 75.2 innings and struck out 80 batters, including 26 looking. Opponents batted just .243 against Umberger, which was the fourth-lowest in the league.

The Chester Springs, Pa. native had several strong outings in his lone season as a Rocket, including on April 13 when he tossed six shutout innings and allowed just four hits with nine strikeouts in a win against Kent State. Umberger was named MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week following that effort.

Umberger also pitched three seasons at Virginia Tech and totaled 34 appearances, mostly as a relief pitcher. He totaled 30 strikeouts and 33.1 innings pitched with the Hokies.

Following the 2024 season, Umberger played in the MLB Draft League with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He registered a 3.77 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched, making eight starts.

Spring training for Major League Baseball will begin next week, with White Sox pitchers and catchers reporting on Wednesday. Feb. 12. Full team workouts will begin on Feb. 17 and spring training games will begin on Feb. 22.
