NORTON, Ohio - The University of Toledo women's cross country team opened its 2024 season on Friday evening with a first-place finish at the Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by the University of Akron. The Rockets finished with 36 points, well ahead of second-place Ohio State's 68 points.
Freshman
Melody Jebiwot made her collegiate cross country debut a memorable one, taking first place with a time of 17:48.5 in the 5K race. Senior
Lou Trois wasn't too far behind, finishing in fifth place with a time of 18:03.3.
The Toledo men's team raced just four runners so they did not qualify for a team score. Sophomore
Max Matolin led the way with a personal-best time of 18:45.1, good for 13
th place. Ohio State won the race with a total of 22 points.
Both teams used the event as a run-through for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional which will be held on Akron's course on Nov. 15.
Toledo's next race is at the We Fly MAC Championship Preview on Friday, Sept. 14 in Muncie, Ind.
