MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Stellar pitching and junior
Caden Konczak's two-run sixth-inning homer lifted the Toledo baseball team to a 3-2 win at Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium. The victory kept the Rockets (16-16, 10-5 MAC) tied for second place in the Mid-American Conference and was UT's fourth conference series win of the season in five tries.
"I am so proud of the way we came back today and played after the way yesterday's game ended," said Head Coach
Rob Reinstetle after his team rebounded from Saturday's 10-9 defeat. "
Caden Konczak came up with a huge home run to give us the lead. Winning a weekend series on the road is always a big deal and keeps us in a good spot in the standings."
Sophomore RJ Shunk started for the Rockets and received a no-decision after allowing four hits and two runs with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Junior
Brennan McCune (2-0) earned the win, while senior
Camryn Szynski recorded his third save.
"
RJ Shunck was really good today and got us off to a good start," Reinstetle said. "The bullpen was equally as good. Brennan (McCune) was really special all weekend by throwing five-plus innings and giving up only one hit in two appearances."
Freshman
JP Wagner led Toledo with three hits and put the Rockets on the board first. He led off the fifth with a single up the middle and advance to third on freshman
Cole Cahill's single to left-center. Wagner scored on freshman DJ Scholvin's sacrifice bunt.
"The wind was blowing straight in today and we crushed some balls that went nowhere," Reinstetle said. "We had to manufacture the first run of the game with a hit-and-run and a safety squeeze."
Toledo will visit Youngstown State for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 9 before returning to Scott Park to host Kent State in a three-game series on Friday-Sunday, April 12-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Toledo scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth on DJ Scholvin's bunt.
- CMU quickly answered in the bottom of the frame and took the lead on Danny Weustenfeld's two-run homer.
- Caden Konczak's two-run homer over the right-field fence in the sixth accounted for the game's final scoring.
- CMU's only scoring threat the remainder of the contest came in the eighth inning when it put runners on first and second with one out. Camryn Szynski entered and proceeded to retire the final five batters he faced.
