Rockets in fifth place in team standings, just seven shots behind leaders
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Senior Barend Botha fired a five-under par 67 and holds a one-stroke lead following Friday's opening round of the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships at The Club at Chatham Hills. Toledo is sitting in fifth place in the team standings at two-over and only seven strokes out of the lead on the par-72, 7,180-yard layout.
Botha, who is looking to repeat as the conference's individual champion, registered a team-high seven birdies and played the back nine at four-under par.
Sophomore Mads Jensen posted the Rockets' second-best round with a one-over par 73. He registered an eagle and four birdies on the day.
The remainder of Toledo's lineup consisted of senior Palmer Yenrick (T-23rd/74), senior Jamie Tofte Nielsen (T-26th/75) and junior CJ van Wyk (44th/81).
Ball State and Miami are tied for the tournament lead at five-under par 283. The RedHawks' Danny Fisher is one stroke behind Botha at the top of the individual leaderboard at four-under par.
The second round of the tournament will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. The third and final round will be held on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
