First-place Toledo controls its own destiny as it seeks No. 1 seed in MAC Tournament
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo women's basketball team enters Wednesday's home game vs. Eastern Michigan (7:00 p.m./ESPN+) in controls of its own destiny as the Rockets seek their third consecutive Mid-American Conference title and a No. 1 seed in this year's MAC Championship Tournament.
Toledo (23-4, 15-1 MAC) is a full game ahead of Ball State (25-4, 14-2 MAC) with two games left to play. If the Rockets defeat EMU and Kent State on Saturday, they would win the outright MAC title and the No. 1 seed at the Mid-American Conference Tournament (March 13-16 in Cleveland) no matter what the Cardinals do in their two games. A Toledo win or Ball State loss at Kent State on Wednesday would clinch at least a share of the MAC title for Toledo.
The Rockets have won their last 11 consecutive games, and received votes in the AP and coaches Top 25 polls for the first time this year. UT picked up two points in the coaches poll and one in the AP media poll.
Â
Eastern Michigan (6-21, 2-14 MAC) has dropped 11 of its last 12 contests. Toledo defeated the Eagles in Ypsilanti, 48-35, in the MAC opener on Jan. 6.
Last Time Out
The Rockets are coming off an 84-69 victory at Western Michigan on Saturday. Senior guard Quinesha Lockett scored 21 points to lead all scorers. The Rockets made 34-of-54 (season-high 63.0%) shots from the floor, including a blistering 18-of-24 (75.0%) in the first half. From three-point range, Toledo made 8-of-15 (53.3%). Lockett made 9-of-14 from the field, while backcourt mate Sophia Wiard scored 15 points on 5-of-6, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, to pace 10 Rockets who made the scoring sheet.
Toledo never trailed in the contest, led 22-16 at the end of the first quarter, 45-34 at halftime, and 69-44 after three periods. WMU scored 14 points in the final four minutes of the game to narrow the final margin to 15 points.
