2/19/2024 1:00:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's basketball team (16-9, 10-2 MAC) has an opportunity to move into a tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday, Feb. 20 when it hosts league-leading Akron (19-6, 11-1 MAC) at 7:00 p.m. The three-time defending MAC champion Rockets enter Tuesday's contest a game behind the Zips in the league standings.

UT will be looking to avenge a 77-70 defeat to Akron on Feb. 2 in Rhodes Arena. Five Rockets scored in double figures in that contest, but it wasn't enough. Toledo shot 43.3% from the field and registered season lows for both three-point field goals (2) and three-point FG% (16.7). Toledo trailed 47-36 at halftime but rallied to within three points, 60-57, on Javan Simmons' three-point play with 6:46 remaining. The Rockets then cut Akron's margin to 75-70 with 30 seconds left but couldn't complete their comeback.

Simmons registered his second-straight double-double with 13 points and a season-high 16 rebounds last Friday to help Toledo to an 85-83 home win over Ohio. The Rockets trailed by as many as 13 points before rallying for the win. Dante Maddox Jr. led UT with 21 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 49 seconds left.

Ra'Heim Moss is leading the Rockets offensively with a career-high 16.4 ppg. He is followed by Maddox (15.9), Tyler Cochran (13.5) and Simmons (13.0).

Akron was the preseason favorite to win the MAC and its lone MAC defeat was a 70-68 loss at Miami on Jan. 27. The Zips' starting lineup includes five seniors with Enrique Freeman leading the way with 18.3 ppg and a national-best 12.9 rpg. Joining Freeman in double digits is Ali Ali (15.7 ppg) and Greg Tribble (10.3 ppg).

UT has won 12 of its last 16 meetings vs. Akron, including six in a row at home.
