Khera Goss becomes 34th player in Toledo history to reach 1,000 points

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Toledo women's basketball team dropped a 92-70 decision to No. 10 Maryland in the final game of the Navy Thanksgiving Classic at Alumni Hall at the United States Naval Academy on Sunday.

The Rockets (4-2) hung close for most of the first half, but Maryland (8-0) pulled away in the second quarter and the 18-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome for Toledo.

Graduate student Nan Garcia scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting to lead Toledo. Classmate Sammi Mikonowicz added 10 points with a pair of makes beyond the three-point line. Sophomore Cadence Dykstra finished with nine points and led the Rockets with six rebounds. Sophomore Kendall Carruthers led the Rockets with five assists. Defensively, Carruthers and Dykstra added two steals apiece.

"We showed our toughness today, especially in the second half," said Head Coach Ginny Boggess. "We challenged the players at halftime and played within four points in the second half. Our young players stepped in and had some big-time minutes for us against a very good Maryland team. No moral victories today, but I think we have a lot to build on and got better this weekend against some great competition."

The game was highlighted by Khera Goss scoring her 1,000th career point. Goss became the 34th player in Toledo history to reach 1,000 career collegiate points. She follows Mikonowicz, who reached 1,000 points last season on Feb. 3, 2024.

Mikonowicz was named to the Navy Classic All-Tournament Team, averaging 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in Toledo's two games this weekend. She scored a career-high 27 points in Toledo's 58-51 win over Navy on Saturday.

First Quarter – Maryland 25, Toledo 21

Maryland scored the first eight points of the game in the first 2:02.
The Rockets scored the next seven points of the period to close within 8-7, with three different scorers.
Toledo would then trade baskets to hold within a possession, eventually tying the game at 17-17 and 19-19.
Maryland scored six straight points to take the lead at the end of the quarter.
Toledo shot 75.0% (9-for-12) including an identical percentage (3-for-4) from three in the period. Maryland also shot 75.0% (12-for-16).

Second Quarter – Maryland 51, Toledo 33

Maryland took a 30-21 lead with the first two baskets of the quarter.
Baskets by Sammi Mikonowicz and Faith Fedd-Robinson kept Toledo within single digits at 39-30 with 3:49 left in the quarter.
The Terps scored 12 of the final 15 points in the quarter to extend their advantage to 51-33.

Third Quarter – Maryland 68, Toledo 46

Baskets by Hannah Noveroske and Destiny Robinson cut the deficit to 56-39 and forced a Maryland timeout at the 6:25 mark.
A 10-2 run over 2:16 gave Maryland a 68-43 advantage late in the period.
Six different Rockets scored in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Khera Goss' free throw at the 8:32 mark was her 1,000^th career point.
Maryland extended the lead to 31, its biggest of the night, at 4:25.
Toledo out-scored the Terps 15-6 over the final 3:30.
Nan Garcia recorded Toledo's first four-point play of the year.

Game Notes

Toledo shot 45.3% from the field, its second-highest field goal percentage of the season.
Freshman Evalyse Cole marked her first career field goal in the first quarter.
Maryland was dominant in the paint, out-scoring Toledo by a 70-34 margin.
