Rockets Face Tough Tests in Navy Thanksgiving Classic in Annapolis

Toledo to take on Navy on Saturday and No. 10 Maryland on Sunday

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team will travel to Annapolis, Md. in compete in the Navy Thanksgiving Classic at Alumni Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy this weekend. The Rockets will face host Navy on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1:00 p.m. before taking on No. 10 Maryland on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
 
Both matchups will be streamed on ESPN+ and radio broadcasts will be on WCWA 1230 AM and The Varsity Network app, with Jim Heller on the call.
 
The Rockets (3-1, 0-0 MAC) built a 16-point lead by the third quarter to push past Long Beach State, 79-72, in Savage Arena on Nov. 22. Sophomore Kendall Carruthers stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points and six assists, shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 4-for-4 from downtown. Sophomore Cadence Dykstra set career highs with 13 points and seven assists.
 
The Midshipmen (6-0, 0-0 Patriot League) defeated Longwood 75-61 on the road on Nov. 23, behind 22 points from Zanai Barnett-Gay. Navy is 2-0 at home this season, having defeated Bryn Athyn and Wagner. Toledo will face Navy for the first time ever.
 
The Terrapins (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten) walloped St. Francis (Pa.) 107-35 on Sunday. UMD also has victories over then-No. 11 Duke and at Syracuse this season. The Terps won the only all-time meeting, 73-60, in the 1992 NCAA Tournament first round.
 
Also in the tournament, Maryland will face George Mason at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Navy will take on GMU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Opening Tips
  • Toledo plays in its first of two multi-team tournaments on the non-conference schedule, with the Cherokee Invitational coming up Dec. 18-19.
  • The Rockets will face an opponent from the Patriot League for the first and only time this season and will also face their second Big Ten opponent (Iowa)
  • Toledo will play a ranked opponent for the first time since the 2023 NCAA Tournament and can earn their third win over a ranked squad in three seasons.
  • The Rockets will face a top-10 opponent for the first time since Dec. 8, 2018, when Toledo hosted No. 2 Notre Dame.
Kendall Carruthers Making an Early Impact
  • After coming to Toledo as a transfer this offseason, Kendall Carruthers has established herself as Toledo's leading scorer, averaging 14.3 points per game.
  • The Springfield High School grad ranks fifth in the league in scoring (14.3), eighth in field-goal percentage (52.6), tied for first in three-point percentage (55.6) and 14th in assists.
  • Carruthers' three-point percentage is also tied for ninth in Division I.
  • She has averaged 16.3 points in the last three games, reaching at least 15 points in all three and draining 10 three-pointers.
Cadence Dykstra Breaks out Against Long Beach State
  • With 13 assists this season, Cadence Dykstra has already surpassed her total from all of last year.
  • This included a career-high seven assists against Long Beach State, helping the Rockets to a season-high 20 assists as a team last Friday.
  • She also marked career highs with 13 points, four field goals (4-for-4) and five free throws (5-for-6). Her perfect shooting night marked the fourth-most field goals without a miss among MAC players this season
  • The Grand Rapids, Mich. native is fourth in the league in assist/turnover ratio (1.63) and seventh in assists per game (3.25).

  • The four teams in the weekend's tournament enter with a combined 21-1 record.
  • Maryland represents the third team Toledo will face on the non-conference schedule which appeared in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
  • Carruthers, Sammi Mikonowicz (7th, 13.5) and Khera Goss (T-15th, 11.8) enter the weekend ranked in th top 15 in the MAC scoring charts.
  • The Rockets block 3.25 shots per game, second-most in the MAC.
  • Hannah Noveroske enters the weekend third in the league at 55.2% from the field and also third with 1.25 blocks per game.
