TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's cross country team is looking to secure an unprecedented fourth-straight conference championship title at the Mid-American Conference Championship race this Saturday, Nov. 2. The 6K race is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Ball State Cross Country Course in Muncie, Ind.
A first-place finish for Toledo would mark the first time the Rockets have won four straight MAC titles. Toledo has won the MAC Championship nine times, including in each of the past three seasons, the second time in program history the Rockets have tallied three-straight titles (2010-12).
Toledo is the only MAC program to be ranked in the latest edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll, debuting with a ranking of No. 29 in the country. The Rockets are also the highest-ranked MAC program in the Great Lakes Region, sitting at No. 4.
The Rockets return six runners from their 2023 championship lineup, including First Team All-MAC honoree Laura Nicholson as well as Second Team All-MAC selection Lianna Surtz.
Senior Lou Trois will return to the conference championship race for the first time since 2022 while freshmen Mercy Kinyanjui and Melody Jebiwot will compete in the event for the first time.
Kinyanjui is looking to earn the individual championship in the women's race after being Toledo's top finisher in the last two races. The redshirt freshman took seventh in the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational and placed 17th overall at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet.
The Rockets have placed in the top 10 in three meets this season, including a fifth place finish at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago where the Rockets were ahead of Texas, Indiana, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Toledo also showed its strength at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals race on Oct. 19 when the squad finished in front of multiple "Power 4" schools, including Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisville.
UP NEXT
The Rockets will continue the championship portion of their season with the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Akron, Ohio on Friday, Nov. 15.
