Rockets set to participate in three meets against nationally ranked competition
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's and women's cross country teams close out the regular season this weekend with a trio of races. The first meets of the weekend will be the Princeton Fall Classic and the Bowling Green Falcon Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18. The weekend will wrap up with eight women's team members competing at the Pre-Nationals Race at Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11:00 a.m. ET
In the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches' Poll, the Toledo women's team were ranked No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region, earning the highest ranking of any Mid-American Conference school. The women's team also received votes in the National Coaches' Poll.
The last time out, both men's and women's teams competed at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Oct. 4. The women's team placed fifth in the 6K race and was led by freshman Mercy Kinyanjui with a seventh-place overall finish. The Rockets placed ahead of then-No. 10 Wisconsin and then-No. 29 Texas, as well as Indiana and Ohio State. The men took a 12th-place finish and saw two runners place within the top 20. Dominic Serem and Joad Martinho paced the team and kept up with nationally ranked opponents.
Toledo will send five members to compete in the women's race and nine men's team members to run at the Princeton Fall Classic on Friday. The women's 6K race is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men's 8K at 11:15 a.m. The women will face six ranked teams at the Princeton Fall Classic, including No. 9 Georgetown, No. 10 Providence and No. 16 North Carolina. The men will race against four ranked programs, including No. 11 North Carolina, No. 19 Villanova, No. 23 Syracuse and hosts No. 17 Princeton.
Four members of the women's team are set to race in the Falcon Invite 6K followed by two members of the men's team in the 8K. The women's race will start at 4:30 p.m. with the men's set for 5:10 p.m. The women will compete against conference foes Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Ohio as well as No. 30 Michigan State. The men will see familiar competition in Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Ohio.
On Saturday, eight members of the women's team are set to compete against some of the best competition in the nation at the Pre-Nationals race at Wisconsin, the site of the 2024 NCAA Cross Country National Championship race. The Rockets are set to race in the women's "A" 6K race against 29 teams ranked in the latest version of the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll, including the top-five schools in the country in Northern Arizona (No. 1), BYU (No. 2), Washington (No. 3), Notre Dame (No. 4) and NC State (No. 5).
