Lockett and Wiard named captains for third consecutive season, Goss for second straight year
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team voted on its 2023-24 team captains this week and selected senior Khera Goss and fifth-year seniors Quinesha Lockett and Sophia Wiard to lead the team.
Lockett and Wiard are now three-time team captains while Goss was voted a captain for the second straight year.
"Sophia, Khera, and Quinesha have earned the respect and confidence of our team and will return as captains this season," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "I'm proud of all three players as they lead by example as well as vocally. When your best players are your hardest workers, you have something special."
A two-time MAC All-Defensive Team selection, Goss started all 34 games last season and averaged 7.4 PPG while scoring in double figures 13 times. The Indianapolis, Ind. native has also earned the team's Best Defensive Player Award each of the last three seasons. Routinely guarding the opposing team's top player, Goss helped Toledo finish second in the MAC in scoring defense (63.7 PPG)
Lockett was named MAC Player of the Year and MAC Tournament MVP in 2022-23, the first conference player of the year for Toledo since 1998-99. She was also named First-Team All-MAC for the second straight season. Lockett averaged 17.9 PPG last season, second in the MAC, and 4.9 RPG and 3.6 APG. The Omaha, Neb. native stood tall when it mattered most, leading the team to a MAC Tournament title and tallying a double-double (24 points and 13 rebounds) in Toledo's NCAA Tournament win vs. Iowa State.
Wiard was named Third-Team All-MAC, the second straight season she was named all-conference. Wiard also started all 34 games and led Toledo in minutes played at 34 MPG. The Rockets' point guard ranked seventh in the nation with a 2.72 assist/turnover ratio and finished second in the MAC at 4.0 APG. Wiard joined the program's 1,000 Career Point Club earlier in the year and averaged 10.0 PPG for the season.
The Rockets begin the 2023-24 season with a challenging non-conference schedule that includes four matchups against 2023 NCAA Tournament teams: James Madison, Gonzaga, Michigan, and Duke. Toledo will host Michigan in Savage Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 6 in a rematch of last season's upset victory in Ann Arbor.
