Senior Madison Medalle breaks Wildcat shutout streak with late penalty kick
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's soccer team battled with a strong Northwestern squad, but two late first-half goals put the Rockets in a hole they could not recover from in a 3-1 loss at Paul Hotmer Field on Sunday.
Â
The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie with five minutes left in the opening half, then added another a few minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Northwestern made it a 3-0 game with another goal at the 53-minute mark.
Â
Senior Madison Medalle gave the Rockets renewed hope when she scored on a penalty kick at the 84-minute mark to trim the lead to 3-1, but the Rockets were not able to rally any further. Toledo's goal was the first allowed by Northwestern (3-0-1) in four games this season.
Â
"I am very proud of the group," head coach Mark Batman said. "We were the first team to score on them all season. We had a very gritty performance, and we just kept asking the team to keep growing every single game. The main thing we talked about today was to be cohesive, pay attention to details, and be a better team. I am happy with the second half, really happy we got a goal, and we'll build off of it to get ready for next Sunday."
