TOLEDO, Ohio – A trio of Rockets have represented or will represent the Toledo women's basketball program on the international stage this summer.
Ella Doherty, Emmi Rinat, and Nan Garcia were each chosen to compete for their home countries in international basketball competition. Doherty was named to Great Britain's U20 national team earlier this week, while Rinat earned a spot on Israel's U20 national team roster as well. Earlier this month, Garcia helped Puerto Rico win a bronze medal in the 2023 GLOBL JAM tournament in Toronto, playing 11 minutes in the bronze medal game against BAL (Basketball Africa League) Selects.
Assistant coach Danielle Page has also been making her mark on the international basketball scene while serving as the Co-Head Coach for the U20 Serbian national team.
Doherty, Rinat, and Page will all be competing at the FIBA U20 European Championships this month. Doherty will be in Group A in Division B located in Romania. Rinat and Page are both in Group A in Division A in Lithuania. Games in Division B begin on Friday, July 28 and Division A begins the following day.
Doherty and Great Britain will face Ukraine on July 28, Germany on July 30, and Switzerland on Aug. 2 during group play. Rinat and Page will face off in group play to open the tournament on July 29 before both of their respective teams face the Czech Republic and Portugal in the coming days.
In addition to current Rockets making an impact, former player Mariella Santucci represented her home nation of Italy on its senior national team this summer at 2023 FIBA Eurobasket. Across four games, Santucci averaged 4.8 PPG and 3.5 APG in just over 17 minutes per contest.
The entire Toledo women's basketball program will be heading to Europe in two weeks for an international trip to Greece. The 11-day trip will feature a pair of games against to-be-determined opponents as well as plenty of sightseeing and other activities.
