TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo will send sophomore
Joy Chirchir and junior
Madeline Vining to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the 2023 NCAA East Regional Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of North Florida University on Wednesday-Saturday, May 24-27.
The women's first day of competition begins on Thursday, where Chirchir and Vining will close out the day with the 10,000m race.
In each event, the top-12 finishers will join the top-12 finishers in the West Regional Championships (Sacramento, Calif.) to complete the field of 24 participants at the national championships. The 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will be held on Wednesday-Saturday, June 7-10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, TX.
Both Vining and Chirchir qualified for the event at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 14 in Azusa, Calif. Vining was clocked at 34:03.57 (16
th), the fastest time by a Rocket this season and fifth-fastest time in program history. Chirchir crossed the finish line not long after her teammate with a PR time of 34:20.31 (22
nd), the second-fastest time by a Rocket this season and seventh-fastest time in UT outdoor records.
At the 2022 East Regional Championships,
Faith Linga finished ninth overall to qualify for the 2022 National Championships in Eugene, Ore. where she finished in 21
st-place. Under head coach
Andrea Grove-McDonough's direction, UT has had 12 participants in the east regional championships and three distance runners qualify for the national championships.
