Rockets Shine on MAC's First Day in Akron with Madeline Vining Claiming Silver Medal in 10K

All four Toledo distance runners finish in Top 10 of 10K race
AKRON, Ohio – Madeline Vining led Toledo women competing on the first day of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Women's Track & Field Championships on Thursday evening at the Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex. The Rockets had a 2-4-5-9 finish in the 10K with Vining earning a silver medal after crossing the finish line at 36:15.33.
Following Vining in the 10K were Joy Chirchir who finished fourth at 36:41.64, with Claire Steigerwald crossing in fifth place with a time of 37:31.64. McKinley Fielding rounded out the group of Rockets in the top-10 with a ninth-place showing in a time of 38:26.23.
All three UT representatives in the 1500m race qualified for Saturday's final race. Lianna Surtz posted the fastest prelims time of 4:35.43, and Alex Bauer finished third in Heat #2 with a time of 4:35.91. Lou Trois qualified with a time of 4:39.30 to finish fourth in Heat #1.
In the 200m prelims, Laryah Worthy, Ava Moran, and Khamani Jones all recorded personal-best times, but did not qualify for the finals. Moran shaved off 0.14 seconds from her previous PR with a time of 25.35. Jones improved her time by 0.27 seconds with a new time of 25.60, and Worthy crushed her previous record by 0.26 seconds to finish with a time of 25.74.
Mayson Bates competed in the first field event of the afternoon, throwing 27.95m (91'8") in the javelin.
Toledo sits in third place after one day of competition with 17 team points. Miami leads the women with 22.5 points, just ahead of host Akron (21.5 pts.).
Competition resumes tomorrow morning with field events at 10:00 a.m. followed by running events at 4:00 p.m.
