Rockets Hold Off Ohio, 66-55, for Fifth Straight Win

Khera Goss scores team-high 13, including eight in the fourth quarter to help seal the win

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday, a 66-55 victory over Ohio in front of 4,527 fans at Savage Arena.

The win improves the Rockets' record to 17-4 and 8-2 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Bobcats drop to 4-17 and 2-8 against MAC foes. Toledo kept pace with first-place Bowling Green (9-1) and Ball State (9-1) in the MAC standings and is now two games up on Kent State (6-4) after the Golden Flashes lost to Ball State on Saturday.

The Rockets led the Bobcats by 11 points at halftime before their offensive well ran dry in the third quarter. They missed 10 straight shots to begin the second half, allowing the Bobcats to pull within a point. Senior Justina King tallied UT's first second-half basket, an and-one at the 1:10 mark of the third quarter that pushed the lead back up to four, 42-38. Ohio continued to hang around, again making it a one-point game with 5:52 to go in the fourth quarter, but eight straight points from junior Khera Goss put the score at 60-51 and gave the Rockets enough breathing room to put away the Bobcats for good.

Ohio's second-half comeback can largely be attributed to Yaya Felder, who scored 19 of her game-high 33 points in the third and fourth quarters.

"We knew this was going to be a difficult game because Ohio runs a very different style compared to everyone else in our league," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "I knew Yaya Felder would be a handful today, but I'm really proud of our players. When things got a little dicey and shots weren't falling we never lost our focus and we continued to fight and find ways to solve our problems. That's something this team has done all season long."

Goss led the way with 13 points, eight of which came during her fourth quarter spurt. She was one of four Rockets to score in double figures, with seniors Quinesha Lockett (12 points), Jayda Jansen (12 points), and Sophia Wiard (10 points) also reaching that benchmark. Wiard was one rebound away from a double-double, recording a team-high nine boards while adding five assists and four steals. Lockett also tied a career-high with three blocks.

"It was good to see Khera Goss step up in those moments when Quinesha Lockett was in foul trouble, and Justina King had a big basket in the second half as well," Cullop said.

For Ohio, Felder's 33 points came on 11-of-20 shooting and she was the only Bobcat to score in double digits. Kendall Hale added eight points off the bench.
