Toledo Pushes Winning Streak to Seven with 71-58 Road Win Over Miami

Nan Garcia and Quinesha Lockett combine for 36 points in victory

OXFORD, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Saturday with a 71-58 win at Miami.

The win pushes the Rockets' record to 19-4 and 10-2 in MAC play, while the RedHawks drop to 9-16 and 4-8 against league opponents.

The lead changed hands several times in the first half, but Toledo took a 33-31 lead into halftime. The Rockets then came out firing to start the second half, quickly building a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

With the win, Toledo remains one game back of first-place Ball State (11-1) and Bowling Green (11-1) in the conference standings. The Rockets will face both teams at the end of the regular season. UT will travel to Muncie on Feb. 25 before hosting the Falcons on March 4.

"I thought a big difference from the first half to the second half was we had seven turnovers in the first half but finished with 11," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "We took better care of the ball in the second half. And to go 19-of-20 from the free throw line is pretty spectacular. It was a really physical game, but our players stayed focused. I was also really proud of Nan Garcia, I thought she really stepped up for us today."

Senior Quinesha Lockett led Toledo offensively with 21 points, her eighth 20-point game of the season. Junior Nan Garcia tied her season high with 15 points off the bench and added seven rebounds, while junior Sammi Mikonowicz collected a game-high 10 rebounds and scored eight points.

Toledo shot 44.4% from the floor (24-for-54) and was excellent from the free throw line, knocking down 19-of-20 shots. Miami shot 21-of-59 (35.6%) from the field and was 9-of-22 from three (40.9%) and was led by Peyton Scott's 21 points.

Toledo will visit Western Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 15 before returning home on Saturday, Feb. 18 vs. Eastern Michigan at 2:00 p.m. That game will be UT's annual "Rockets for the Cure" game, which will help benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio and the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink that day in support of breast cancer research.

Fans can purchase tickets for $13 apiece with $5 of each sale donated to the Susan G. Komen and Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center. Please visit utrockets.com/RFCtix to purchase tickets.
