TOLEDO, Ohio - CornerbackÂ
Quinyon Mitchell was named second-team All-America by two major All-America teams today, the Football Writers Association of America and the Associated Press.Â
The FWAA All-America Team presented by the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and the AP All-America team are two of the five teams used by the NCAA to select its consensus team. The other three are the AFCA, The Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. In 2022, Mitchell earned second-team All-America honors from Walter Camp and third-team honors from the AP, making him just the second Rocket ever and the first since defensive lineman Mel Long Sr. (1970-71) to earn back-to-back All-America honors from at least one of the five major teams.
Mitchell, who was also named to All-America teams by The Athletic (first team) and USA Today (second team) this season, is second in the nation with 18 pass breakups and in passes defended with 19 (18 pass breakups, one interception). He was named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's most outstanding defensive player in the country. He is the first Rocket ever to be a Bednarik semifinalist and the first player from a MAC school since Northern Illinois' Sutton Smith in 2017.
Mitchell also received an official invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl. The game will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at 12 noon CT (1:00 p.m. ET) at Hancock-Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala. and will be televised live on NFL Network.Â
Mitchell led the nation with 25 passes defended (five interceptions, 20 breakups) in 2022, and was named second-team All-America by Walter Camp, Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus, and third-team All-America by the Associated Press.Â
