Rockets look to carry MAC Championship success into their postseason on Friday afternoon
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's cross country team looks to build on its third-straight Mid-American Conference championship when it begins its postseason at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 8 in Madison, Wis.. The women's 6K championship race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (EST) at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
The Rockets won the program's ninth conference title in Bowling Green, Ohio on Oct. 28. The only previous time UT has won three consecutive titles was 2010-12. Senior Laura Nicholson led Toledo with a sixth-place individual finish and a PR time of 20:50.03 to earn first-team All-MAC honors. Sophomore Lianna Surtz (8th) and senior Madeline Vining (14th) earned second-team honors, while Andrea Grove-McDonough was named MAC Women's Coach of the Year for a third time.
Toledo has overcome many obstacles this season with injuries and keeps finding the next runner in its lineup to hopefully reach the NCAA Championship meet again this year. Last season, the Rockets were led by junior Joy Chirchir (5th) and senior Faith Linga (10th) and finished sixth as a team to ultimately receive an at-large bid to the championship race in Stillwater, Okla.
Toledo enters the race as the No. 6-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region. UT and 32 other programs will fight for an automatic berth to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Charlottesville, Va. The top two teams earn an automatic ticket to the NCAA and an additional 13 schools will be selected from the nine regions as at-large teams. The top four individuals to cross the finish line and the top two at-large racers not competing on a team will also advance to the national race.
