Toledo Suffers First Loss of Season with 92-84 Setback to New Mexico

Three Rockets tally career scoring high with Dante Maddox Jr. leading way with 23 points

HENDERSON, Nev. – Juniors Dante Maddox Jr., Ra'Heim Moss and Andre Lorentsson each registered career scoring highs, but it wasn't enough for the Toledo men's basketball team (3-1) on Tuesday night in a hard-fought 92-84 setback to New Mexico (3-1). The contest featured nine lead changes and was the first of three games UT will play this week in the Ball Dawgs Classic at the Dollar Loan Center.

Maddox led the way for Toledo with 23 points and five rebounds. He was joined in double digits by Moss (22 pts.), Lorentsson (17 pts.) and redshirt freshman Javan Simmons (11 pts.). Freshman Sonny Wilson dished out a season-high six assists for the Rockets.

Jamal Mashburn Jr. and JT Toppin paced New Mexico offensively by scoring 27 points apiece. Toppin also grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Lobos register a 43-25 advantage on the boards.

"New Mexico is a good team and the end of the first half really hurt us," said Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk about the Lobos and their 8-0 run right before halftime. "I was disappointed in our decision-making and rebounding. Those are things we need to clean up moving forward."

Moss fouled out with six minutes remaining and knocked down 8-of-10 shots from the field before sitting down. His shooting helped the Rockets register a 50.9 FG%, the third time in four outings this season UT has made over half of its shots. Lorentsson was equally as efficient from three-point range, knocking down 4-of-5 attempts to help Toledo match its season average of 44.4% from behind the arc.

The Rockets will face UC-Irvine (4-1) tomorrow night at 8:45 p.m. PT before closing out the Ball Dawgs Classic vs. Indiana State (3-1) on Friday, Nov. 24 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
