TULSA, OK – Senior
Pawit Sornlaksup represented Toledo at the ITA All-American Championships, entering as the No. 80 ranked ITA men's singles player straight into the qualifying singles draw. Sornlaksup fell to a tough University of Tulsa opponent in three sets to end his run in the national tournament.
Sornlaksup opened this year's tournament vs. Tulsa's Alex Okonkwo and lost 6-1 in the opening set. Sornlaksup fought back in the second set to win 6-3 and force a deciding third set, where his run ended in a 6-1 final. Sornlaksup was then placed in the consolation bracket but decided not to play because of an ankle injury.
Head coach
Al Wermer said the level of competition at the event was very high, with Sornlaksup facing a very tough opponent in his opener.
"Alex battled very well through a roller coaster of a match and he deserved to advance," Wermer said. "I know Pawit was very excited about this incredible opportunity. The All-American Championships is one of the events he targeted coming out of his summer. Because of its sheer size and the stakes, Tulsa was a relentless proving ground, and battle of attrition."
This is the second year Sornlaksup represented Toledo in the largest college fall event. He and four players from Northern Illinois University were the only Mid-American Conference players to participate in Tulsa.
Up next, Toledo will host its Zach Barden Memorial Invitational at Launchpad Tennis on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 13-14.
