TOLEDO, Ohio – After guiding teams without any seniors the last two years, Head Coach
Jenny Coluccio is looking forward to having a veteran squad at her disposal in the upcoming 2022-23 campaign. Toledo's roster will include three seniors this season as well as four juniors which the Rockets' fifth-year coach can count on for experience.
Seniors
Amelia Lee,
Kathryn Roth and
Claudia Sampson are entering their final campaigns as Rockets and have made a profound impact on the program's culture. Lee paced the Rockets in scoring average last year, while Roth and Sampson dealt with injuries for portions of last season.
"We are excited about how our upperclassmen, seniors particularly, have grown since joining our program," Coluccio said. "Their development as young women and leaders, and the qualities they bring to our program are invaluable. The time has flown by for the seniors, particularly with Covid and everything they have had to overcome."
Coluccio also is pleased how the junior class of
Macy Hanus,
Angel Hii,
Cheryl Hong and
Kaitlyn Natividad has developed.
"Our junior class has really grown, especially over this past summer when they crossed the threshold from being an underclassman to becoming an upperclassman," Coluccio said. "It's rewarding to see them develop into leaders and make an impact both on and off the course."
Hanus and Natividad spent their summers working as caddies, Hanus at the Inverness Club and Natividad at her home club in Illinois, in addition to working hard on their games. They experienced an up-and-down year as sophomores that Coluccio believes will result in a season filled with more consistency.
"Working as a caddie gave them a unique perspective and an opportunity to learn," Coluccio said. "Coaching someone else can really help you look objectively at your own game and how you approach situations on the course."
Hii and Hong were able to work on their games in their homeland of Malaysia in addition to spending time with family and friends. The duo has enjoyed some success over the last two seasons and are looking forward to another competitive year.
Sophomore
Yedam Lee will have her eyes set on building off her freshman campaign where she competed in every tournament. Her season was highlighted by winning MAC Golfer of Week honors after tying for fifth place at the Tchefuncta Invitational.
"Yedam had a successful freshman year," Coluccio said. "The biggest key for her this season will be managing expectations. After a successful year, we put our heads right back down and get back to work and she has done that this summer."
Sophomore
Cameron Ford saw action in three tournaments as a freshman, one of which was the team's best score in Missouri.
"She has a lot of raw talent. Our focus is to mine that talent and define her skill sets a little bit more this fall," Coluccio said.
Reese Jansa is the Rockets' lone freshman and comes to Toledo following a successful prep career in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was a four-time state medalist who won the 2021 state tournament by 11 strokes with a record score of eight-under 134 (66-68).
"Reese is a dynamic player," Coluccio said. "When we welcome a new player, our intention is for them to raise the bar and push our veterans to continue to get better. It is also a careful balance of them not putting too much pressure on themselves to perform and trusting their process that got them here."
Coluccio believes with the entire team returning from a year ago combined with the addition of Jansa that a different focus has formed within her squad.
"I already feel like we're starting at a different level of competition within the team than we had last year," Coluccio said. "The players now have an attitude of "Let's get after it!
". This year will be interesting and exciting. Our first lineup includes players from each class, and I'm sure it will be a mix throughout the year. The biggest key for us this year is to manage our way around the golf course more productively. We want to play with a competitive edge, show more grit, and make smart decisions."
Toledo will open its season at the Yale Invitational on Sept. 10-11 and will host the Rocket Classic in Port Clinton, Ohio for a second straight year. This year's MAC Championships will be held in Kalamazoo, Mich. on April 21-23.
