Faith Linga Wins 10,000m Race at MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Junior Faith Linga paced the Toledo women's track & field team in the opening day of the 2022 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday. The Rockets collected 19 team points and are tied with Eastern Michigan through one day of competition.
"It was a wild night out there on the track," head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough said. "The weather cooperated nicely. After the two pedestrian laps, the favorite Miami (Ohio) girl took out the race and our girls stayed composed and went with her. They made a move and took over the race to finish 1-2."
All three of UT's runners placed in the top-10 of the 10,000m race, collecting 19 team points and three podium finishes.  Linga paced the pack with a first-place finish at 33:57.02 and was closely followed by senior Stephanie Sherman in a 33:59.39 runner-up finish. Senior Claire Steigerwald finished eighth with a time of 35:57.95.
"Stephanie and Faith will now switch their focus to the NCAA First Round with aims at making it to the NCAA Finals," Grove-McDonough added.
Freshman Mayson Bates threw a career-best 29.85m in the javelin and finished ninth.
Sophomore Promise Cross finished sixth in her heat, 16th overall of the 400 hurdles but did not advance to the finals on Saturday.
The Rockets will be back for Day Two of the three-day meet on Friday afternoon. Field events are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and will be followed by running events at 3:30p.m. at Kanley Track.
