AUBURN, Ala. – The Toledo softball team split its doubleheader on Day Two of the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament on Saturday. The Rockets defeated Chattanooga 5-4 in the morning, and ended up short in a 9-0 (5 inn.) final to No. 20 Auburn.
In the morning game with Chattanooga, neither team could keep a lead longer than half an inning. In the third, senior
Dayna Denner smashed a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to give the Rockets a one-run lead. Three batters later junior
Riley Mohr hit an RBI single to tally one more run for the Rockets (3-1). The Mocs tied the game 3-3 in the fourth off a sacrifice RBI followed by a solo home run. Denner put the Rockets ahead once again, off an RBI single with one out in the sixth, and the Mocs could not answer offensively in the seventh. Toledo ended its four-game drought with the 5-4 win over Chattanooga.
"
Sophia Knight came out and won us a game against Chattanooga today," head coach
Joe Abraham said. "She gave up a few runs, but no big innings, no freebies and then held them down in the seventh with some clutch pitching defense. I challenged the pitchers today to go out and get us a win and she did it.
Lily Beyer keeps reaching base and playing good defense, which is giving us a boost and
Riley Mohr is hitting consistently, with a clutch two-out single in the game."
In the afternoon contest, host No. 20 Auburn took an early one-run lead in the opening inning, followed by a two-RBI single in the next inning (3-0). The Tigers opened the fourth with a leadoff homer, then lead runner Carlee McCondichie stole home, followed by an RBI double, a two-run homer and one more RBI double to end the inning to make the final score 6-0.
"Against Auburn we played a clean defensive game and had some good at-bats, but it's just a tough assignment," Abraham said. "Going up against that top-notch pitching will pay off for us as we face the top pitchers in the MAC."
Denner's home run vs. Chattanooga was her fourth of the season and 22
nd of her Toledo career. Denner is now tied for second all-time with Leslie String (2005-08).
Toledo (4-10) will play its final game of the tournament tomorrow morning vs. North Carolina A&T at 10:00 a.m.
