EATONTON, Ga. – Junior NJ Botha fired a career-low five-under par 67 to lead Toledo in Sunday's opening round of the three-day Linger Longer Invitational. Botha is in a four-way tie for the top spot on the leaderboard. His play helped the Rockets to a sixth-place standing with an even-par 288 against a 15-team field that includes nine Top 50 teams.
Botha was at two-under through his first 14 holes before registering an eagle on the par-five, 557-yard No. 6 hole. He then birdied his final hole for his best round as a Rocket at the par-72, 7,436-yard Great Waters Golf Course.
"NJ played a great round on a course impacted a bunch by the wind today," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "He had a play a lot in the wind most of his life in South Africa, so it didn't really phase him."
Senior David Amm also produced a strong outing, finishing with an even-par 72 to sit in a 20th-place tie. Senior Lukas Clark is tied for 37th place at two-over par 74, sophomore Jamie Tofte Nielsen is tied for 46th place at three-over par 75 and sophomore Barend Botha is tied for 58th place at four-over par 76.
"Our team's overall play was good, but we're still looking for the consistency that will lead to higher levels of accomplishment," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "That doesn't happen overnight and it's something we're continuing to strive for."
The tournament's second round will be held tomorrow with the final round on Tuesday. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
