STILLWATER, Okla. – The Toledo women's cross country team concluded its season with a 28-place team finish at the 2022 NCAA Championship Meet in Stillwater, Okla. Saturday morning at the OSU Cross Country Course. Sophomore Joy Chirchir led the way for the Midnight Blue and Gold in the 34-degree weather with a 52nd-place finish, beating her 147th-place finish at last year's championship.
"It's been truly a great year and an important step for our program to get back into the national championships for the first time in several years," Director of cross country and track & field Andrea Grove-McDonough said after the race. "There is no doubt we were hoping for a little more out of today, but I'm immensely proud of our program, our athletes, our staff, and everyone who is behind the scenes helping this program grow. We are leaving here with a ton of motivation for what's to come."
Toledo finished with 654 team points. NC State defended its title and won the race with 114 team points, followed by New Mexico (140 pts.) and Alabama (166 pts).  Katelyn Tyohy of NC State was crowned the individual champion, running past Parker Valby of Florida in the final 800m and crossing the tape at 19:27.7.
Chirchir crossed the line at 20:17.2 at the same time as Brianna Weidler from UC Davis to just miss the top-50. Seniors Faith Linga and Emily Vining cracked the top-200 runners, finishing 127th and 196th, respectively. Senior Lou Trois and junior Julia Dames had a 209-210 finish, separated by a tenth of a second. Senior Madeline Vining finished 227th and freshman McKinley Fielding finished 246th in her first national championship race.
