MADISON, Wis. – The Toledo women's cross country team finished 12th in the Women's 6K Championship race of the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis. on Friday morning. The Rockets defeated 13 of the top women's programs in the country in their first 6K race of the season. Sophomore Joy Chirchir led the way with a 35th-place finish in the Pre-Nationals meet.
Toledo raced against 24 of the top-30 programs in the country and four other teams receiving votes in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll. The Rockets beat 13 of those teams including Wisconsin, Syracuse, Michigan, Michigan State, Washington, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa State among others.
No. 1 NC State won the meet, followed by No. 2 New Mexico, and No. 4 Northern Arizona.
Chirchir crossed the finish line with a time of 20:24.5 to lead the Rockets with her 35th-place finish. Sophomore Faith Linga finished in 70th-place and senior Madeline Vining rounded out the top-100 runners with a personal-best time of 20:55.0. Senior Lou Trois ran a 21:08.5 and was followed by senior Emily Vining who posted a personal-best 21:16.2. Freshman McKinley Fielding finished her first 6K with a time of 21:59.3, with junior Julia Dames finishing two positions behind  Fielding with a time 22:00.1. Freshman Bailey Ranta rounded out the runners for Toledo with a time of 22.30.4.
Three Rockets ran in the Women's "B" Race, and were led by senior Paige Embaugh. She finished in 83rd-place with a personal-best time of 22:31.2. Senior Claire Steigerwald followed with a time of 22:52.4, and freshman Marina Gross finished her first 6K with a time of 23:55.8.
Toledo has one more meet on the docks before heading to the Mid-American Conference Championships at the end of the month. The Rockets will travel to Wayne State University on Saturday, Oct. 22 for the Warrior Challenge.
