TOLEDO, Ohio – Sophomore
Sammi Mikonowicz tied a single-game school record with 22 rebounds on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough as Toledo fell to Ohio 79-72 at home. The loss snaps the Rockets' eight-game winning streak and is their first blemish in Mid-American Conference play.
Â
Mikonowicz and Liz Meiring now share the program's single-game rebound record, with the latter achieving that feat against Kent State on Jan. 8, 1985. The Rossford, Ohio native is one of nine players in the nation this season with at least 22 rebounds in a game.
Â
Toledo (14-4, 8-1 MAC) led by as many as nine late in the third quarter, but saw its offensive well run dry against a hot-shooting Ohio team (11-5, 5-2 MAC) in the fourth quarter. UT made just 5-of-20 shots in the final frame while the Bobcats shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11).
Â
"I think we'll learn a lot from this game," head coach
Tricia Cullop said. "I'm not devastated that we lost. I think we'll learn from it and move on. We have a big game this Saturday and we want to be ready for that. I don't think very many teams will make it through our league this year without losing a few games. We lost one today, but now we need to dust ourselves off and get back up and learn from it."
Â
In addition to her 22 rebounds, Mikonowicz added 13 points and five assists on Wednesday evening. The Rockets' leading scorer was junior
Quinesha Lockett with 22 points, her ninth game this season with at least 20 points. Junior
Sophia Wiard added 18 points and freshman
Jessica Cook tied a career-high with 19 points while collecting nine rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end.
Â
Toledo won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Ohio to 46-33. The Bobcats had the best shooting performance any UT opponent has had all season, connecting on 45.6 percent of their shots (26-for-57) and making half of their three-pointers (8-of-16). The Midnight Blue and Gold shot 40.6 percent (28-for-69) from the field on Wednesday, but made just 4-of-26 shots from beyond the arc.
Â
Ohio was led by the MAC's leading scorer Cece Hooks and her 30 points. Teammates Gabby Burris (15 points, nine rebounds) and Erica Johnson (17 points, eight rebounds) had productive nights for the Bobcats as well.
Â
The Rockets head to Bowling Green (9-7, MAC 4-3) to face their arch-rivals this Saturday, Jan. 29. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
Â
1st Quarter
- Ohio's Gabby Burris scored her team's first five points to give OU a 5-2 lead early in the game.
- Wiard then buried a three-pointer to tie the score at 5-5 at the 8:41 mark.
- The Bobcats led for much of the first quarter until an 11-3 scoring run put the Rockets ahead by four, 20-16, with 1:42 to go. Lockett's three-pointer capped the Toledo scoring spurt.
- Cece Hooks, the MAC's leading scorer, drove to the hoop for two with under a minute to go to cut UT's lead to 20-18.
Â
2nd Quarter
- Wiard and Cook opened the scoring in the second quarter with back-to-back baskets to push the Rockets' lead to six points, 24-18.
- Toledo led for nearly the entire second quarter, only ceding part of the lead with 4:30 to go on a layup by Hooks that tied the score at 32-32.
- The Rockets hung on for the rest of the quarter, taking a 38-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Â
3rd Quarter
- The third quarter was Toledo's best shooting period of the night, with 50 percent of its shots from the field (8-for-16) falling.
- The Rockets' lead grew to as many as nine points near the end of the quarter. Cook scored with 27 seconds left to make it 58-49 and, after a pair of OU free throws, Lockett's bucket at the buzzer put the score at 60-51 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Â
4th Quarter
- Wiard halted an Ohio surge with a pullup jumper with 7:12 to go to put the Rockets back up by five, 66-61.
- Toledo continued to fend off the Bobcats the best it could, scoring on back-to-back possessions to take a six-point lead, 70-64, with 5:01 to play.
- The Rockets could only hold off their opponents for so long, as Ohio's sharpshooting would pave the way for a game-ending 15-2 run that helped seal its 79-72 comeback victory.
