Jacksonville, Fla. - Senior Stephanie Sherman qualified for next month's NCAA Championships with a personal best time of 34:08.86 in the 10,000m at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. Thursday night. Sherman, who finished in 11th place in a field of 48 runners, will now advance to the NCAA Championship Meet in Eugene, Oregon on June 9-12.
Sherman, who was seeded No. 43 going into the race, overcame great odds to make it to the national finals
"Tonight was incredible. Stephanie Sherman is the ultimate underdog story," said Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "Truthfully, we knew she could do it but to see her fight the way she did and chase those final qualifying spots was an incredible experience for us all. This was definitely one of the more rewarding nights of my career as a coach."
In the 1500m qualifying race, senior Petronela Simiuc qualified for Saturday's finals by finishing in 19th place with a time of 4:20.11.
"Petra was brilliant and it was a big relief," said Grove-McDonough. "What people don't know is she has been nursing an injury and hasn't been able to run at all for the last five days. So to be such a gamer and run with so much poise was amazing. She closed her last 800m in about 2:10 so she's feeling good."
In the 400m hurdles, senior Yana Khabina ran a season-best time of 59:41 but it wasn't enough to advance her to the finals. "I was proud of Yana to run her fastest race in years and close out her career on such a high note," said Grove-McDonough.
Simiuc will run in the 1500m finals on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. Also on Saturday, junior Semra Karaslan and sophomore Emily Vining will compete in the 3000m at 6:10 p.m., while Sherman will try her luck in the 5000m at 8:30 p.m.
