Toledo and Bowling Green Renew Rivalry on Wednesday Night

11/7/2021 11:27:00 AM

TOLEDO, Ohio – One of the great rivalries in college football resumes when Toledo makes the 26-mile trip to Bowling Green's Doyt L. Perry Stadium in the Battle of I-75 on Wednesday, Nov. 10 (7:00 p.m./CBS Sports Network).

Toledo (4-5, 2-3 MAC) holds a slim one-game advantage in the series, 41-40-4, though the Rockets have won 10 of the last 11 meetings. Toledo won easily in the Glass Bowl last year, 38-3, avenging a 20-7 loss at BG in 2019 that snapped a nine-game series skid for the Falcons.

Toledo will need to rebound from a bitter 52-49 home-field loss to Eastern Michigan on Nov. 2. Redshirt freshman quarterback Dequan Finn had the most prolific night of his career, passing for a career-best 461 yards and three touchdowns but his attempt to lead a last-second comeback came up short.

Toledo's defense stopped EMU on fourth down with less than a minute to go, taking over on its own 19-yard line. The Rockets advanced to their own 45-yard line, and on the final play of the game Devin Maddox took a lateral from Isaiah Winstead and sliced through the EMU defense before eventually being tackled at the 21-yard line to end the game.

The Rockets tallied 672 yards of offense vs. EMU, their most in a game since accumulating 679 yards of offense against Tulsa on Sept. 16, 2017. Finn's 461 passing yards tied for second-most ever by a Toledo quarterback with Bruce Gradkowski, who threw for 461 yards against Pittsburgh in 2003.

Bowling Green (3-6, 1-4 MAC) is coming off a 56-44 win at Buffalo on Oct. 10.

Rocket Round-Up
  • Toledo and Bowling Green will be playing for the Battle of I-75 Trophy for the 11th time. Toledo won the trophy for the first time in 2011 and has held it every year since then except in 2019 when the Falcons won in Bowling Green.
  • Bowling Green last won in the Glass in 2008, a streak of six straight losses in the Glass City.
  • Toledo ranks first in the MAC in scoring defense (22.0) and defensive passing efficiency (121.2), second in total defense (345.0), and fourth in rushing defense (144.3).
  • Toledo ranks second in the MAC in turnover margin (+0.7) and fewest turnovers (six in nine games), which is also tied for fifth-fewest in the nation.
  • Junior Bryant Koback rushed for a season-high 180 yards vs. EMU, now has 3,441 career rushing yards, passing David Fluellen (3,336 yards from 2010-13) for sixth place on Toledo's all-time list. The all-time leader is Kareem Hunt (2013-16) with 4,945 yards. It was the 10th 100-yard game in Koback's career.

  • Redshirt freshman Jacquez Stuart's 97-yard kickoff return for a TD was Toledo's first since a 98-yarder from Diontae Johnson vs. Nevada on Sept. 22, 2018.
