TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team cruised past Wright State in its home opener on Saturday, winning 73-56 in front of 4,193 fans at Savage Arena.
The Rockets (2-0) cracked 70 points and held their opponent to a field goal percentage below 40 percent for a second straight game. The Raiders (0-2) shot just 30.9 percent from the field.
"I think this team can hang its hat on its defensive play," head coach
Tricia Cullop said. "I do think we need to do a little better job of taking care of the ball, and we can be a bit more selective with our shots. But defensively we want to make sure we make the game tough on the other team. It's been fun watching us do that these last two games."
Freshman
Jessica Cook was terrific, notching a double-double in her second consecutive game. The Clay, N.Y. native scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, giving her two double-doubles in her first two college games.
Junior
Quinesha Lockett led all players with 23 points, her second straight game with the same point total. Classmate
Sophia Wiard poured in 12 points and grabbed eight boards while leading Toledo with six assists and three steals, while sophomore
Khera Goss and junior
Hannah Noveroske both added six points apiece.
Cook is the first Rocket to have a double-double in consecutive games since Kaayla McIntyre achieved that feat during the 2018-19 season. Entering play on Saturday, only six other players in Division I had multiple double-doubles in the first week of the 2021-22 season.
"She stepped back and hit a few 15-footers today, and she can score in the low block," head coach
Tricia Cullop said of Cook. "But what I love about her is she has great foot speed, she runs really hard in transition, and she does a wonderful job on the boards. She has great touch inside with either hand. Not to mention how pleased I am with her play defensively."
Next up for Toledo is a Wednesday morning matchup with the Dayton Flyers. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
1st Quarter

- Toledo quickly tied it up before Lockett buried the first of her four three-pointers to put UT ahead 7-4 at the 5:57 mark.
- The Raiders tied the score at 7-7, but Noveroske scored from close range to give the Rockets a 9-7 advantage with 4:26 to go in the first quarter.

- Cook scored 10 of her 19 points in the second quarter.
- Her second basket of the quarter kicked off a 12-0 Toledo run that made the score 35-22 with 6:34 to go in the first half. Lockett accounted for eight of those 12 points, taking a turnover the other way for an easy bucket and knocking down back-to-back threes.
- The Rockets' lead grew to a game-high 23 points at the 2:35 mark, with Cook grabbing an offensive rebound and going back up strong for two points. Her basket gave UT a 41-18 advantage.

4th Quarter
- Wright State continued to stay in-step with Toledo and cut the deficit to 14 points, 60-46, with 7:00 to go in the game.
